So they keep out sweat, skin cells, dust etc and dramatically cuts down on dust mites. An unprotected mattress doubles in weight in 10 years so a waterproof protector is essential.

Remember to wash the protectors regularly as the sweat, skin cells etc will be building up on the top layer.
